Lost Children https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/lost-children-edith-pargeter-1 Tue, 24 Mar 2026 17:25:13 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/lost-children-edith-pargeter-1 Set in the shadow of the Second World War, this novel explores the lives of displaced and orphaned children brought to Britain from war‑torn Europe, and the adults who struggle to care for them. Through a compassionate and clear‑eyed narrative, the story examines the emotional aftermath of conflict: trauma, identity, belonging, and the fragile process of rebuilding trust. Pargeter portrays both the resilience of children and the moral challenges faced by those trying to help them, creating a work that is socially aware yet deeply human. Edith Pargeter, later famous under the name Ellis Peters for the Brother Cadfael mysteries, brings warmth, psychological insight, and moral seriousness to this early work. Readers interested in postwar Britain, refugee experiences, and character‑driven historical fiction will find this a moving and thoughtful novel.

Brideshead Revisited https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/brideshead-revisited-evelyn-waugh-1 Sun, 07 Jul 2024 11:58:24 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/brideshead-revisited-evelyn-waugh-1 Selected by Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of the century and called Evelyn Waugh’s finest achievement by the New York Times, Brideshead Revisited is a stunning exploration of desire, duty, and memory. The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh’s masterpiece — a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire. Through the story of Charles Ryder’s entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities. At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh’s early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity. A genuine literary masterpiece. —Time Heartbreakingly beautiful…The twentieth century’s finest English novel. —Los Angeles Times

Memoirs: 1925-1950 https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/memoirs-1925-1950-george-f-kennan-1 Thu, 27 Jun 2024 08:11:27 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/memoirs-1925-1950-george-f-kennan-1 This book is the personal and professional record of one of America’s most distinguished diplomats, George F. Kennan. On his graduation from Princeton in 1925, moved perhaps by the example of his distant cousin George Kennan, who wrote the classic work on Siberia, the younger George prepared to enter the Foreign Service. After a short exposure to diplomacy in Germany and on the Baltic Coast, the young consul felt so inadequate that he was about to resign. His career was salvaged when the State Department registered him as a student of Russian at the University of Berlin, and here he began to acquire his knowledge of and insight into the Russian character which were to serve him so well. It has been Mr. Kennan’s destiny to be posted repeatedly at the threshold of crises. His fluency in Russian make him an indispensable member of Ambassador Bullitt’s small staff which reopened the American Embassy in Moscow in 1933. He was an observer at Stalin’s famous purge trials. He was in Prague when the Germans took over Czechoslovakia. When Hitler declared war on the United States, Mr. Kennan was in Berlin and was interned for six months. He was Harriman’s right-hand man in Moscow from 1944 to 1946 during the strenuous war negotiations with the Kremlin. Throughout this long exposure to the agony of Europe, Mr. Kennan was evolving policies for dealing with the Russians and, after the end of the war, the Germans. His Russian policies he defined in a series of farsighted Position Papers, which were sent to the State Department and pigeonholed without comment.

Escape to adventure https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/escape-to-adventure-fitzroy-maclean-1 Thu, 27 Jun 2024 08:10:45 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/escape-to-adventure-fitzroy-maclean-1 The author was a Scottish soldier, writer and politician. Issued in Britain under the title Eastern Approaches, this book is Maclean’s account of his experiences as a diplomat and military officer and his first years as a member of Parliament. It has been widely speculated that Ian Fleming used Maclean as one of his inspirations for James Bond. This is the classic true adventure story of a man who by the pen, the sword and the diplomatic pouch influenced some of the most significant events of our era. Here Fitzroy Maclean recounts his extraordinary adventures in Soviet Central Asia, in the Western Desert, where he specialized in hair-raising commando-style raids behind enemy lines, and with Tito’s partisans during the last months of the German occupation of Yugoslavia. An enthralling narrative, brilliantly told, it is also a vivid personal view of episodes that have already become part of history.

The Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/the-ornament-of-the-world-how-muslims-jews-and-christians-created-a-culture-of-tolerance-in-medieval-spain-maria-rosa-menocal-1 Thu, 27 Jun 2024 08:10:27 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/the-ornament-of-the-world-how-muslims-jews-and-christians-created-a-culture-of-tolerance-in-medieval-spain-maria-rosa-menocal-1 This classic bestseller — the inspiration for the PBS series — is an illuminating and even inspiring portrait of medieval Spain that explores the golden age when Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together in an atmosphere of tolerance (Los Angeles Times). This enthralling history, widely hailed as a revelation of a lost golden age, brings to vivid life the rich and thriving culture of medieval Spain, where for more than seven centuries Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together in an atmosphere of tolerance, and where literature, science, and the arts flourished. It is no exaggeration to say that what we presumptuously call ‘Western’ culture is owed in large measure to the Andalusian enlightenment…This book partly restores a world we have lost. —Christopher Hitchens, The Nation

Reilly resolutely maintains his innocence and Jeremy believes him, and is certain that when the evidence is presented in court his client will be shown not to have a stain on his character. But he had reckoned without the machinations of the child protection act, under which the principal witness cannot be cross-examined. Furious at a judicial system which he’d always seen as fallible but fair, Jeremy decides to investigate the circumstances of Reilly’s case himself, stepping outside the bounds of his own profession. He discovers an underground but parallel world darkly reflecting the work of the real judicial system – one which does not take kindly to someone throwing light on their alternative means of justice.
