Though the plot line and the form of the libretto are far from unique, Beethoven — after a decade of unceasing revision — was able to rise above the limitations of the material and infuse it with transcendent nobility. Of all my children, the composer said, this is the one that cost me with worst birth pangs . . . and for that reason it is the one most dear to me. Audiences and musicians have long shared Beethoven’s sentiments, making Fidelio one of the most performed, most studied, most recorded operas of all time. This reliable edition from Dover reproduces the full orchestral and vocal score, with ample space in the margins for analytical notation. In one sturdily bound, inexpensive volume, here is Beethoven’s genius for orchestration combined with the drama of the human voice in choruses, duets, emotion-filled arias, and an intense finale. More than anything else, the idealistic themes of the opera — justice, freedom, heroism, love — inspired Beethoven to transcend the libretto and forge a musical structure that far surpasses the literary foundation on which it is built. Whether in a humorous aria, such as Hat man auch nicht Geld beineben, or a glorious four-part canon, such as Mir ist so wunderbar, the music carries the words to a plane far beyond themselves. Reprinted in its entirety from the authoritative C. F. Peters edition, this faithful edition of the well-loved Fidelio will delight music lovers, opera enthusiasts, Beethoven devotees, teachers, and students — not least of all for its remarkably affordable price.

Great English Short Stories https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/great-english-short-stories-paul-negri-ed-1 Fri, 26 Sep 2025 17:58:24 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/great-english-short-stories-paul-negri-ed-1 The delighted wonder surrounding a cat that has learned to talk quickly turns to dismay when the feline’s conversation involves the scandalous remarks he’s overheard. Tobermory abounds in the irony for which its author, Saki, is well known and admired. Along with the other short stories in this first-rate anthology, it showcases the talents of a renowned British writer. Other stories include Anthony Trollope’s The Parson’s Daughter of Oxney Colne, a subtle study of the psychological cost of maintaining self-esteem; Thomas Hardy’s The Fiddler of the Reels, in which a village girl is seduced by the beguiling melodies of a diabolical musician; and M. R. James’s Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad, the tale of a vacationing professor who conjures up the unexpected with an artifact from a ruined medieval church. The Haunted House, by Charles Dickens, and Rudyard Kipling’s story of a golden-haired ghost, The Phantom ‘Rickshaw, also venture into the supernatural. Additional selections include D. H. Lawrence’s The Prussian Officer, H. G. Wells’s Under the Knife, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Lodging for the Night, plus stories by John Galsworthy, Wilkie Collins, and others.

Quantum Theory https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/quantum-theory-david-bohm-1 Wed, 27 Aug 2025 17:57:02 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/quantum-theory-david-bohm-1 This superb text by David Bohm, formerly Princeton University and Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at Birkbeck College, University of London, provides a formulation of the quantum theory in terms of qualitative and imaginative concepts that have evolved outside and beyond classical theory. Although it presents the main ideas of quantum theory essentially in nonmathematical terms, it follows these with a broad range of specific applications that are worked out in considerable mathematical detail. Addressed primarily to advanced undergraduate students, the text begins with a study of the physical formulation of the quantum theory, from its origin and early development through an analysis of wave vs. particle properties of matter. In Part II, Professor Bohm addresses the mathematical formulation of the quantum theory, examining wave functions, operators, Schrödinger’s equation, fluctuations, correlations, and eigenfunctions. Part III takes up applications to simple systems and further extensions of quantum theory formulation, including matrix formulation and spin and angular momentum. Parts IV and V explore the methods of approximate solution of Schrödinger’s equation and the theory of scattering. In Part VI, the process of measurement is examined along with the relationship between quantum and classical concepts. Throughout the text, Professor Bohm places strong emphasis on showing how the quantum theory can be developed in a natural way, starting from the previously existing classical theory and going step by step through the experimental facts and theoretical lines of reasoning which led to replacement of the classical theory by the quantum theory.

Decorative Alphabets and Initials https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/decorative-alphabets-and-initials-alexander-nesbitt-1 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 18:11:00 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/decorative-alphabets-and-initials-alexander-nesbitt-1 Decorative Alphabets and Initials. Edited by Alexander Nesbitt. Nesbitt, Alexander: Published by Dover Publication, New York, 1959 This unusual Dover publication presents a singular opportunity to the artist, crafter, designer, illustrator, printer, or other user of letter designs to have always at hand a rich store of inspiration and a swipe-file. More important, you may reproduce any initial or alphabet in this volume free of charge, without asking permission. The work is all royalty-free; when you buy the book, you buy the reproduction rights to any individual part of it. The price is less than you would pay to professional archives for one copy of the letter. There are 123 full-page plates including 91 complete alphabets in widely differing styles. In all, there are 3,924 initial letters. These alphabets were obtained from rare, out-of-print books, generally available only in libraries or in the rare-book market. They were reproduced directly from the pages of a large and expensive collection that was made specifically for the production of this volume. Since they are direct reproductions, they will all reproduce again excellently. The book has been carefully arranged and annotated by the compiler so that the student of letters and types may have a complete understanding of decorative alphabets and initials. The work is divided into three parts. Part One deals entirely with manuscript initials as they were used from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries. It includes Celtic initials, rare designs from the Bible of Charles the Bald, and incised letters from the monument of Richard II in Westminster Abbey. Part Two contains initials from printed books, starting with the fifteenth century and running through the eighteenth. Here are the fanciful creations of the sixteenth-century woodcutters; initials illustrated with children, cherubs, birds, beasts, flowers, legends, and grotesque heads. The work of the later engravers, writing masters, and baroque and rococo designers follows in order. Part Three attempts to arrange the great weedy jungle of Victorian letters and types and concludes with twentieth-century alphabets such as the distinctive wood engraving of Edward Wadsworth. Each section has a historical introduction, and each plate has a descriptive caption.

Script Lettering for Artists (Lettering, Calligraphy, Typography) https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/script-lettering-for-artists-lettering-calligraphy-typography-thompson-tommy-1 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 18:09:53 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/script-lettering-for-artists-lettering-calligraphy-typography-thompson-tommy-1 One feature of the general resurgence of the graphic arts is the revival of the script letter. Media such as advertising, packaging, book and periodical page designs, etc. have brought the glories of the master penmen of the past back into vogue. This volume, prepared by a noted authority and containing numerous examples of his handiwork, is a basic guide to the construction of the script letter and its practical use. The book gives the beginner a thorough, straightforward course of instruction, with advice on virtually every facet of the art of script lettering. In his clear and economical presentation, the author tells you how to hold the pen, how the letters should be slanted, how to build the letters out of a few primary strokes, the direction of the pen in inking, and every other step of the process. He also deals with the construction of numerals, the flourish and its basic elements, how to correct mistakes, commercial handwriting, etc and gives a concise introduction to layout and package design. Throughout his account, Thompson stresses materials, tools, and equipment needed and provides exact specifications, brand names, penpoint types and sizes, and the like. The history of lettering is also briefly sketched, and there are examples from early copybooks, including the work of some of the famous penmen and engravers of history: Bickham, Tompkins, Cocker, Barbedor, and others. In addition, the book offers dozens of illustrations of script work in present-day advertising and packaging, together with samples of various styles (round hand, bâtarde, coulée, free style, and more). All this illustrative material furnishes excellent models for study and practice. This, then, is an essential book for every art director and designer concerned with lettering. It is also a fundamental text used in advertising and commercial art courses throughout the country; no student in the field should be without a copy.

STAR NAMES Their Lore and Meaning https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/star-names-their-lore-and-meaning-richard-h-allen-1 Tue, 01 Jul 2025 19:11:02 +0000 https://knjiga.hr/star-names-their-lore-and-meaning-richard-h-allen-1 Here is an unusual book for anyone who appreciates the beauty and wonder of the stars. Solidly based upon years of thorough research into astronomical writings and observations of the ancient Chinese, Arabic, Euphrates, Hellenic, and Roman civilizations, it is an informative, non-technical excursion into the vast heritage of folklore and history associated with the heavenly bodies. From his studies of the writings of scores of ancient astronomers, the author has come up with a fascinating history of the names various cultures have given the constellations, the literary and folkloristic uses that have been made of the stars through the centuries, and the often incredible associations that ancient peoples established with the stars. He covers, for example, the origins of the lunar and solar zodiacs; the use of stars and constellations in the Bible and other sacred writings, poetry, etc.; the idea of the Milky Way; how star pictures were originally set up and why; astrology and the use of stars to tell people’s fortunes; and many other star curiosities. In this regard, the book touches upon not only all of the constellations (including many that long ago dropped out of star catalogues), but their important stars and such other asterisms as the Hyades, the Pleiades, the Great Nebula of Andromeda, and the Magellanic Clouds. The book is the only complete coverage of its kind in English. It is completely non-technical, hence accessible to etymologists, anthropologists, and amateur star-gazers. But it contains so much unique reading material on early astronomical theory, so many delightful accounts drawn from the pages of books almost impossible to find today, that even the practicing astronomer will find it refreshingly new and instructive.
