Svatković je čovjek opsesivno opterećen vlastitom smrtnošću. Suočen s dijagnozama, bolestima i smrtima u bližem okruženju, pokušava ispričati svoju životnu priču i definirati odnos prema roditeljima, bratu, suprugama i djeci. Nastojeći objasniti misterij smrti zapravo razlaže misterij života – njegovu ljepotu, bol i konačni smisao. Uspješan zaposlenik njujorške marketinške agencije, otac je dvojice sinova iz prvog braka koji ga preziru i kćeri iz drugog braka koja ga obožava. Voljeni je brat dobroga čovjeka čija tjelesna dobrobit u njemu izaziva gorku zavist i usamljeni bivši muž trima različitim ženama s kojima je uspio upropastiti brak. Na samom kraju, on je postao čovjekom kojim ne želi biti. Prostor na kojem se događa ovaj snažan roman – Rothova dvadeset sedma knjiga i peta objavljena u dvadeset prvom stoljeću – ljudsko je tijelo.
