Tue, 26 May 2026 18:07:54 +0000https://knjiga.hr/frankenstein-or-the-modern-prometheus-mary-shelley-1-3A landmark of Gothic fiction and early science fiction, this novel tells the story of an ambitious young scientist who defies natural limits and succeeds in creating life—only to recoil from the being he brings into the world. Told through layered narratives and framed as a tale of exploration and discovery, it explores the devastating consequences of isolation, rejection, and unchecked ambition. The “monster” at its heart is rendered with surprising depth, raising unsettling questions about responsibility, empathy, and what it truly means to be human. Written by a young Romantic-era author in the early nineteenth century, the book reflects contemporary debates about science, revolution, and the power of imagination. Its themes of creation and creator, alienation, and moral accountability remain strikingly modern.

Snažna atmosfera i moralne dileme čine ga jednako aktualnim i danas, privlačnim ljubiteljima klasika, horora i filozofskih promišljanja.

No, suočen s posljedicama vlastitog eksperimenta, odbacuje svoje stvorenje, što dovodi do niza tragičnih događaja. Djelo postavlja duboka filozofska pitanja o odnosu čovjeka i stvaranja, zbog čega i danas ostaje iznimno aktualno. Prevela Nada Šoljan.

Sat, 21 Mar 2026 12:58:46 +0000https://knjiga.hr/frankenstajn-moderni-prometej-mary-shelley-1Klasični gotički roman koji je postao temelj moderne naučne fantastike i horora. Priča prati mladog naučnika opsednutog idejom da otkrije tajnu života, čiji eksperiment dovodi do stvaranja bića odbačenog od društva i sopstvenog tvorca. Kroz sudbinu Viktora Frankenštajna i njegovog „čudovišta“, roman istražuje teme granica nauke, moralne odgovornosti, usamljenosti, predrasuda i ljudske potrebe za prihvatanjem. Ovo izdanje privući će ljubitelje klasike, mračne atmosfere i dubokih psiholoških i filozofskih pitanja.

https://knjiga.test.knjige.hr/frankenstein-or-the-modern-prometheus-mary-shelley-1-2
Wed, 08 Nov 2023 09:51:12 +0000https://knjiga.hr/frankenstein-or-the-modern-prometheus-mary-shelley-1-2Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 novel written by English author Mary Shelley. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20. Her name first appeared in the second edition, which was published in Paris in 1821. Shelley travelled through Europe in 1815, moving along the river Rhine in Germany, and stopping in Gernsheim, 17 kilometres away from Frankenstein Castle, where, two centuries before, an alchemist had engaged in experiments. She then journeyed to the region of Geneva, Switzerland, where much of the story takes place. Galvanism and occult ideas were topics of conversation for her companions, particularly for her lover and future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley. In 1816, Mary, Percy, John Polidori, and Lord Byron had a competition to see who wrote the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley was inspired to write Frankenstein after imagining a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made. Though Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement, Brian Aldiss has argued for regarding it as the first true science-fiction story. In contrast to previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, Aldiss states, the central character makes a deliberate decision and turns to modern experiments in the laboratory to achieve fantastic results. The novel has had a considerable influence on literature and on popular culture; it has spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays. Since the publication of the novel, the name Frankenstein has often been used, erroneously, to refer to the monster, rather than to his creator/father.
