George Orwell was an inveterate keeper of diaries. The Orwell Diaries presents eleven of them, covering the period 1931-1949, and follows Orwell from his early years as a writer to his last literary notebook. An entry from 1931 tells of a communal shave in the Trafalgar Square fountains, while notes from his travels through industrial England show the development of the impassioned social commentator. This same acute power of observation is evident in his diaries from Morocco, as well as at home, where his domestic diaries chart the progress of his garden and animals with a keen eye; the wartime diaries, from descriptions of events overseas to the daily violence closer to home, describe astutely his perspective on the politics of both, and provide a new and entirely refreshing insight into Orwell’s character and his great works.

U romanu Životinjska farma Georgea Orwella, grupa životinja na Vlastelinskoj farmi u Engleskoj, nezadovoljna lošim tretmanom od strane vlasnika, gospodina Jonesa, odlučuje se pobuniti i preuzeti kontrolu nad farmom. Inspirirani govorom starog Majora, koji poziva na ujedinjenje i pobunu protiv čovjeka, životinje uspješno otjeraju Jonesa i uspostavljaju novi poredak. Na čelu pobune su dvije mlade svinje, Napoleon i Snowball, koji uvode reforme i donose Sedam zapovijedi, među kojima je i Svi su jednaki. Međutim, kako vrijeme prolazi, svinje, predvođene Napoleonom, počinju koristiti svoj položaj za osobnu korist, izmjenjujući zapovijedi i stvarajući hijerarhiju unutar farme. Na kraju, svinje postaju toliko slične ljudima da se više ne može razlikovati tko je svinja, a tko čovjek, što simbolizira propast prvotne ideje o jednakosti i slobodi.

Roman Tisuću devetsto osamdeset četvrta jedan je od najznačajnijih romana svjetske književnosti i zasigurno najpoznatiji distopijski roman uopće. Učinak Tisuću devetsto osamdeset četvrte na jezik i popularnu kulturu bio je i jest golem: koncepti Velikog Brata, Sobe 101, Misaone policije, Novozbora, Dvomisli i Ministarstva ljubavi postale su uobičajene fraze kojima se označavaju opasnosti od totalitarnih autoriteta. Danas društvene mreže prikupljaju svaku gestu, kupnju ili komentar koji napravimo na internetu i mogu predvidjeti svaku našu sklonost. Po uzoru na izbor potrošača i potrošač postaje roba koja se prodaje, pa prikupljanje tih preferencija za političke kampanje sada ozbiljno narušava demokraciju. A obvezna svakodnevna dvominutna mržnja iz romana mogla bi se čitati kao predviđanje današnjih izljeva mržnje na društvenim mrežama.

Životinjska farma je satirična alegorijska novela, u obliku bajke o zvijeri, Georgea Orwella, prvi put objavljena u Engleskoj 17. kolovoza 1945. Priča priču o skupini antropomorfnih domaćih životinja koje se bune protiv svog ljudskog farmera, nadajući se da će stvoriti društvo u kojem životinje mogu biti jednake, slobodne i sretne. Naposljetku, pobuna je izdana i, pod diktaturom svinje po imenu Napoleon, farma završava u jednako lošem stanju kao i prije. Prema Orwellu, Životinjska farma odražava događaje koji su doveli do ruske revolucije 1917., a zatim do staljinističke ere Sovjetskog Saveza, razdoblja kada je Rusija živjela pod komunističkom ideologijom Josipa Staljina. Orwell, demokratski socijalist, bio je kritičar Staljina i neprijateljski raspoložen prema staljinizmu pod vodstvom Moskve, stav koji je bio kritično oblikovan njegovim iskustvima tijekom sukoba između POUM-a i staljinističkih snaga tijekom Španjolskog građanskog rata za vrijeme Barcelone tijekom Prvog svibnja. U pismu Yvonne Davet, Orwell je Životinjsku farmu opisao kao satiričnu priču protiv Staljina (un conte satirique contre Staline), a u svom eseju Zašto pišem (1946.), napisao je: Životinjska farma bila je prva knjiga u kojoj sam, s punom sviješću o tome što radim, pokušao spojiti političku i umjetničku svrhu u jednu cjelinu.

The new novel by George Orwell is the major work towards which all his previous writing has pointed. Critics have hailed it as his most solid, most brilliant work. Though the story of Nineteen Eighty-Four takes place thirty-five years hence, it is in every sense timely. The scene is London, where there has been no new housing since 1950 and where the city-wide slums are called Victory Mansions. Science has abandoned Man for the State. As every citizen knows only too well, war is peace. To Winston Smith, a young man who works in the Ministry of Truth (Minitru for short), come two people who transform this life completely. One is Julia, whom he meets after she hands him a slip reading, I love you. The other is O’Brien, who tells him, We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness. The way in which Winston is betrayed by the one and, against his own desires and instincts, ultimately betrays the other, makes a story of mounting drama and suspense.
