Likovi su strogo moralni, poštuju običaje svoga vremena u skladu sa strogim vaspitanjem u pobožnom duhu. Međutim, neobična ljubav devojke Dorotee uspeva da nađe kompromis između strogih društvenih konvencija i pravih osećanja. Pišući Midlmarč, Eliotova je želela da prikaže način na koji moderan društveni život sputava jedinku, ograničava njenu energiju i uništava joj moć da ostvari svrhu svog postojanja na ovom svetu.
