Mon, 25 May 2026 18:14:39 +0000https://knjiga.hr/middlemarch-george-eliot-1-4Set in a provincial English town in the years before the Reform Act of 1832, this panoramic novel weaves together the lives, ambitions, and disappointments of several interconnected characters. At its heart are Dorothea Brooke, an idealistic young woman yearning for a life of moral purpose, and Tertius Lydgate, an ambitious doctor determined to modernize medicine. Their aspirations collide with the constraints of marriage, money, politics, and social expectation. Rich in psychological insight, the book explores themes of idealism, compromise, reform, and the intricate web of community life. With sympathy and quiet irony, the author—one of the great Victorian novelists—examines how private choices ripple through public worlds. A deeply rewarding classic for readers who enjoy character-driven fiction, moral complexity, and immersive social realism.

At its heart are two idealists: Dorothea Brooke, a passionate young woman who marries the elderly scholar Edward Casaubon hoping to join his futile quest for The Key to All Mythologies, only to face disillusionment; and Tertius Lydgate, an ambitious doctor whose medical reforms and marriage to the materialistic Rosamond Vincy lead to compromise and debt. The novel explores themes of thwarted ambition, moral complexity, marriage’s pitfalls, and the clash between personal dreams and societal constraints, creating a panoramic study of provincial life with richly human characters.

Fri, 16 Jan 2026 19:13:12 +0000https://knjiga.hr/felix-holt-the-radical-george-eliot-1Felix Holt, the Radical is a social and political novel by George Eliot, published in 1866. Set in a fictional English town during the time of the 1832 Reform Act, it explores class tensions and electoral intrigue through the contrasting figures of Harold Transome, a wealthy landowner who opportunistically adopts Radical politics to win a parliamentary seat against his family’s Tory traditions, and Felix Holt, a principled working-class intellectual who champions moral reform and education for the working class over superficial political change. The narrative intertwines their ambitions with the story of Esther Lyon, stepdaughter of a nonconformist minister and secret heiress to the Transome estate, who grapples with romantic choices that symbolize broader conflicts between personal ambition, social mobility, and ethical commitment. Eliot critiques corruption across political factions, emphasizing themes of class consciousness, secular devotion, and the need for societal moral renewal beyond mere voting reforms.

The story centers on Adam Bede, a principled and hardworking carpenter in love with the beautiful but vain Hetty Sorrel, who falls prey to the charms of Arthur Donnithorne, the youthful squire whose seduction leads to tragedy, remorse, and a trial for child murder. Amid themes of love, morality, social class, and redemption, Hetty’s cousin Dinah Morris, a devout Methodist preacher, offers compassion that influences the outcome, while Adam finds eventual solace in a union with Dinah, highlighting Eliot’s exploration of human folly and forgiveness in a close-knit community.

Fri, 16 Jan 2026 19:10:04 +0000https://knjiga.hr/daniel-deronda-george-eliot-1George Eliot’s final novel, Daniel Deronda (1876), intertwines two parallel narratives set in Victorian England. The beautiful but selfish Gwendolen Harleth impulsively marries the cruel aristocrat Grandcourt, plunging into guilt and moral crisis after his death, seeking redemption through the principled Daniel Deronda. Deronda, raised uncertain of his parentage by a wealthy guardian, rescues the despairing Jewish singer Mirah Lapidoth from suicide, drawing him into London’s Jewish community and early Zionist ideals under the tutelage of the scholar Mordecai. As Deronda uncovers his own Jewish heritage from his estranged mother, a former actress, he embraces his identity, falls in love with Mirah, and commits to a spiritual mission for Jewish restoration, contrasting Gwendolen’s personal turmoil with broader themes of heritage, empathy, and self-discovery.
