Imati ili biti? Ericha Fromma je fundamentalno djelo socijalne filozofije u kojem Fromm istražuje dva temeljna načina ljudskog postojanja: način imanja i način bivanja. Način imanja karakterizira fokus na materijalne posjede, moć i status, što Fromm tvrdi da vodi do pohlepe, zavisti i društvenog otuđenja. Nasuprot tome, način bivanja usredotočuje se na autentično samoizražavanje, ljubav, dijeljenje i produktivnu aktivnost, potičući istinsko ispunjenje i povezanost s drugima. Voljeti ne znači samo posjedovati, ograničiti partnerovu slobodu ili se isključiti iz života okoline. Naprotiv, voljeti znači spoznati ljubav koja će nas otvoriti cijelom svijetu, uz neočekivane perspektive. Ljubav je umijeće koje treba naučiti, koje od nas zahtijeva trud, brigu, poštovanje, odgovornost i znanje, a proces učenja jednak je kao i kod svega drugoga: morate savladati i teoriju i praksu, i tek tada postat ćete majstor ovoga umijeća. Kako Fromm kaže, ovladavanje umijećem ljubavi mora vam biti prioritet, a svi vaši pokušaji da ostvarite ljubav osuđeni su na propast ako se ne potrudite aktivnije razviti svoju ukupnu ličnost jer zadovoljstvo u individualnoj ljubavi ne može se postići bez sposobnosti da se voli bližnji, bez istinske poniznosti, hrabrosti, vjere i discipline. U ovoj knjizi Fromm propituje sve aspekte ljubavi: od romantične i erotske preko majčinske, očinske i bratske ljubavi do sebeljublja i ljubavi prema Bogu.
